Cioyo a hidden treasure

Just 20 km from the coast, tucked away in the mountains joining Vegadeo and Castropol, is one of the most impressive waterfalls in Asturias

Cioyo –bit of a tongue-twister- is a magnificent cascade 30 metres high, plunging into a deep pool of freezing swirling water jets, the ultimate jacuzzi! Had me scrambling out feeling like a new woman…

We usually head down the path carrying Spanish omelettes, empanadas (bit like a flat Cornish pasty), bollos preñaos and bottle or two of the local cider.  A fabulous walk in magical woodlands, providing welcome shade on a hot summer’s day.

If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can climb up the river on an unmarked path for a dip in the pools further upstream, with lots of lovely natural rock passages to slide down. The view of the waterfall looking down from the top is just stunning!
